Tonsillitis is a very common disorder related to tonsil’s inflammation. Tonsils are the lymph nodes that, generally, act as a defence mechanism, producing white blood cells that help in fighting bacteria entering the mouth.

Natural Home Remedies For Tonsillitis

Tonsils are located on the two sides of the throat and are quite vulnerable to bacterial and viral infections. Children are commonly affected with this disorder because they come in close contact with other children while playing or drinking water at school. This way the infection easily spreads from one child to the other. However, there are numerous causes to tonsillitis.

Symptoms of Tonsillitis

The most common symptoms of tonsillitis include:

  • Sore throat and pain when swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils with pus-filled spots
  • High temperature
  • Headache
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Pain in the ears and/or neck
  • Tiredness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Coughing
  • Chills
  • Swollen lymph glands

Less common symptoms can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Stomach pain and vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Furry tongue
  • Changes in the sound of the voice
  • Bad breath
  • Difficulty opening the mouth

In some cases, tonsillitis, also known as tonsil stones or tonsillar calculi, may be present. A tonsillitis is a calcified build-up of material in the crevices of the tonsils. Also in other part of West African is know as “Belu-Belu” 

They are generally small, but in rare cases, tonsillitis have measured 30 centimeters and above.

Tonsillitis can be a nuisance and sometimes difficult to remove, but they are not generally harmful.

Causes of Tonsillitis

Bacterial and viral infections can cause tonsillitis. A common cause is Streptococcus (strep) bacteria. Other common causes include:

  • Adenoviruses
  • Influenza virus
  • Epstein-Barr virus
  • Parainfluenza viruses
  • Enteroviruses
  • Herpes simplex virus

Tonsillitis can be easily treated using simple ingredients available in any kitchen. Here are a few most commonly available and easy to prepare homemade medicines for tonsil inflammation.


Garlic is also an effective remedy for tonsillitis, as it fights inflammation and germ attack. Make a ginger paste and warm it in a microwave oven. Then, soak cotton balls in this paste and apply it externally on your throat for quick relief from swelling.


Lemon is widely known for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can act as an effective medicine to cure tonsillitis by reducing inflammation and fighting off the bacterial or viral infection in the tonsils.

Slice open a full lemon into two halves. Sprinkle salt and black pepper on the slice and lick the juice from it. Doing this several times a day will clear your throat by reducing mucous congestion.

You can also prepare a lemon drink by mixing the juice from one whole lemon to a glass of lukewarm water. You can add honey for better taste. Drink this lemon juice at least twice every day for quick results.

Salt Water

Salt water is the most commonly used homemade remedy to treat tonsillitis. Mix salt with warm water and gargle with it as many times as possible in a day. Gargling frequently with salt water will clear the infection in the tonsils and also provide immediate relief from pain by reducing inflammation.


Yes, ice can, actually, help reduce tonsillitis. Wrap a few cubes of ice in a piece of cloth and gently press it on the throat. Practice this cold press for up to 20 minutes and 4-5 times every day for quick recovery.

Other remedies

  1. Pineapple is also very beneficial in tonsillitis.
  2. Crush one garlic clove and mix in one glass of hot water. Do gargle with this water.
  3. Boil one table spoonful of turmeric powder, half table spoonful of dried ginger and some sugar in 250 gm milk. Strain and drink that milk every night before going to bed.
  4. Put 3 drops of lukewarm sesame oil in your ears. It will give you relief in tonsillitis.
  5. Mix some glycerin in one glass lukewarm water and do gargle.
  6. Mix little holy basil juice with honey and consume.


Tonsillitis affects the tonsils in your throat and hence, you must try to keep it warm as much as possible. Drinking hot fluids like chicken soup, vegetable soup or ginger tea, several times a day will help you feel better while the homemade remedies will act and cure the problem.
